Vehicle safety features are there for a reason….

There has been and still is a lot of progress, speculation and debate around fully autonomous vehicles. We are however still some way off these becoming the norm and in the interim vehicle manufacturers continue to introduce technological safety features into new vehicles to make them smarter and safer. Examples of such features include Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), lane departure warning systems, proximity sensors and camera systems. A lack of education and understanding of the benefits that these features bring, often however results in drivers deliberately turning such safety systems off.

The systems have principally been introduced to make vehicles safer. The utilisation of vehicle technology safety features can however also aid to: reduce the frequency and severity of accidents and incidents; minimise clams costs; improve fuel efficiency; and ensure legal compliance.

It is therefore paramount that that if vehicles are being sourced that incorporate any such safety technology, vehicle providers and fleet managers ensure that adequate information is delivered to drivers to allow them to: fully understand the purpose of the system(s); appreciate the potential benefits they will bring them; and to be certain that they are being used and maintained correctly.
